A resume is a brief summary that is meant to offer information about your education, background, and past employment in a systematic manner. Today, resumes are considered crucial to secure a job as they make the first impression on your behalf. It is only when the employer is satisfied with your resume that they are likely to call you for an interview. You may even look out for assured ways to get into an interview with your resume.

In many aspects, a resume is comparable to an advertisement. It is important to decide on the format of the ad before publishing, so it is important to have a proper format for your resume. If you have been through some resume examples, you may have noticed that there are different ways to write a resume.

 Broadly, it can be classified into four types. Go through each of the types to know which will work best for you:

Chronological Resume

One of the most common formats in which resumes are written in the chronological format. Here you list your work and education in a chronological manner- starting with the earliest and ending in the latest Employers too prefer this type of resume as they are quick and easy to go through.

This type is best suited for those who have considerable work history and experience that are relevant for the job they are seeking.

Functional Resume

In the functional resumes, more weightage is given to your skills and experiences. So these are the things that you list first. This format does not put too much emphasis on the dates. Further, your employment history is pushed towards the end after the skills and experience list is completed.

This type of resume is best suited for those who have gap years in between employment. Fresh graduates with career counseling or internship as the only experience can also opt for this format.

Targeted Resumes

One of the most solid types of resumes is the targeted ones. Although they take a lot of time to be created, they are usually very effective. Targeted resumes are created specifically for the job that you are applying for. So you write down qualifications and experiences that are especially relevant to the job.

Although there is no hard and fast rule for who can adopt the format, it works best for those who have relevant experience.

Combination Resume

As the name suggests, the combination resume is a little bit of all the types you have been through before. You can write down your skills and experience and back it with the chronological dates. You can use the career objective to state why you are especially suited to that particular job.

This format is suitable for those who like to provide details. It is also suitable for intermediaries as you can speak of both your experience as well as your skillset.
